چکیده

Ambient intelligence has acquired a relevant presence in assistive technologies. Context-awareness, the ability to perceive situations and to act providing suitable responses, plays a key role in such presence. BrainAble, an ongoing European project, aims at raising the autonomy of people with functional diversity, facilitating and enhancing the interaction with their environment. Brain-computer interfaces are applied as communication means to allow users to perform actions by using their electroencephalogram signals. Multiple approaches are studied and combined in order to provide the best set of brain signals which specifies a concrete event or action. In this setting, we propose the application of context-awareness to extend the traditional proactive and pervasive nature of ambient intelligence in a way which enhances the braincomputer interface. One practical example is the dynamic personalization of available options in the user interface, based on user’s current context.

Selecting and Extracting Effective Features of SSVEP-based Brain-Computer Interface

User interfaces are always one of the most important applied and study fields of information technology. The development and expansion of cognitive science studies and functionalization of its tools such as BCI1, as well as popularization of methods such as SSVEP2 to stimulate brain waves, have led to using these techniques every day, especially in appropriate solutions for physically and menta...

On the Need for Both Internal and External Context Awareness for Reliable BCIs

In this paper we argue that for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to be used reliably for extended periods of time, they must be able to adapt to the user’s evolving needs. This adaptation should not only be a function of the environmental (external) context, but should also consider the internal context, such as cognitive states and brain signal reliability. We demonstrate two successful approa...

EEG Based Brain Computer Interface Hand Grasp Control: Feature Extraction Method MTCSP

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are communication systems, which enable users to send commands to computers by using brain activity only; this activity being generally measured by Electroencephalography (EEG). BCIs are generally designed according to a pattern recognition approach, i.e., by extracting features from EEG signals, and by using a classifier to identify the user’s mental state from...

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...
